Research by Anderson, Watson and Fielding (1998) has shown that increasing independent reading can substantially increase standardized test scores. Students scoring in the 98th percentile on standardized tests read independently an average of 60 minutes per day while students who score in the 10th percentile read independently for an average of only 10 minutes per day. There are several things that parents can do to help facilitate the love of reading.
  1. Be a role model. Demonstrate that reading is an important part of your everyday life. Go to the library and the bookstore. Read the newspaper, internet articles, books and magazines. Talk to your child about what you are reading and why it interests you.
  2. Allow your child to choose what he/she wants to read! Everyone’s interest is different and they often change. Talk about what interests your child and help them choose articles and books that reflect their personal interests.
  3. Make your home reflect the importance of literacy. Give your child opportunities to read by having reading material available. When looking for reading materials look particularly for items of interest to your child particularly those that have to do with their favorite sports team, movie star, band, or a special hobby.
